Other Half Brewing

I joined Other Half as a Senior Designer in 2022 and worked my way up to Design Director by 2024, before scaling back my position to freelance after the birth of my second child. 

During my time in-house, I helped develop new organizational structures and processes while continuing to solidify the company's brand voice across a growing number of taproom locations and an expanded product mix. I oversaw both the design and social media teams, planning campaigns as well as directing and reviewing every piece of branded collateral that was produced.

All of this while designing (and continuing to design) hundreds of labels throughout my time with the company. Beer labels are the most prominent face of Other Half as a brand, and the quality of design on the outside of the can has always been inextricably tied to the excellent product inside. I worked directly with Other Half’s founder, Master Brewer, and de facto Creative Director to push the boundaries of Other Half's style while staying true to the balance of sophisticated design and tongue-in-cheek playfulness that the brand has become known for.



Flagship Re-brands


As Other Half moved from a local hype brewery with a cult following to a semi-national brand name, many of the flagship labels had to be reworked to appeal to a wider audience. We tried to find the balance of maintaining the overall essence of each brand while allowing the name to be more visible and the colors to pop off the shelf. 

I also lead the conversion of our flagship brands from our iconic, but short, sticker labels to full color printed cans. We aimed for consistency with our other brands while maximizing the impact of the larger branding surface.




In Bloom


In Bloom is a sub-brand of spontaneously fermented beers brewed exclusively out of Other Half’s Bloomfield location in the Finger Lakes region of western New York state. Each bottle had a very limited release based on the seasonality of the grains and fruits used to make them. These tart and refreshing bottled beers called for a different type of design aesthetic, one that was more delicate and esoteric than that of the standard Other Half IPAs.



Green City 2023: Come Out and Play


In 2023, Other Half hosted their flagship IPA festival, Green City, at their original taproom in Brooklyn, NY after years of hosting the event offsite. As a sort of “homecoming”, we developed a theme near and dear to our founder’s heart. Based on the could-never-be-made-today classic, The Warriors, each beer represented a different “gang,” utilizing illustrations loosely based on each of the movie gangs’ badges. The branding for the campaign was a modern take on the graffiti-covered subway cars of the 1970s, complete with our very own Broccoli tag.



Pastrytown


In 2023, Other Half hosted the final year of their Pastry Stout festical, Pastrytown.  Originally developed by Stout Collective in 2019 as an ode to Saturday morning cartoons, the branding for the festival featured goofy-faced sweet treats on an array of adventures — from tropical escapades to space endeavors. For its final year, we brought our pastry pals back home, so to speak, with a series of labels paying homage to many facets of New York City.
